The Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO) created this guidance in consultation with national pharmacy and pharmacist associations, thought leaders from national and regional chain drug stores, ASTHO members, and key federal officials. The aim of the document is to assist health departments in maximizing the potential of chain and independent pharmacies as a viable resource for vaccination sites as part of an aggressive and comprehensive planning effort.
The Framework encompasses three major components: Planning Considerations, Formulizing Partnerships, and template documents. Expanding on the CDC Provider Agreement for H1N1, the guidance provides additional information needed to effectively partner with pharmacies for the purposes of administering the H1N1 vaccine. Template documents are included to help formulate plans and agreements with this partner group, as well as a template Executive Order to address any needed regulatory changes that may need to be considered in expanding pharmacists’ immunization authority in a specific jurisdiction.
