Development of a Triage Protocol for Critical Care during an Influenza Pandemic (Ontario, Canada)

Agency:
Ontario Health Plan for an Influenza Pandemic
Practice Description:

A collaborative, evidence-based triage protocol was designed for use as a decision-making tool when a critical care system becomes overwhelmed. The system of triage is applicable to patients with and without pandemic influenza, since all patients would share the same scarce resources. The authors recognize that the technicalities of the process may not be feasible for direct training and application during a pandemic, and public health agencies would need to be critical partners during implementation of this approach. Although the report does not address how to introduce the concept of triage to the general public, the protocol provides useful materials that any local department or group of medical practitioners could customize for their own preparedness efforts or use to foster discussion on ethical considerations.

The Working Group Report was added as a supplement to the published protocol, and thus has not been reviewed.
